Chapter

Thirty-Four

Searching through the village of Sharton’s Hollow, looking for the bodies of Amelie’s mother and sister, went how I expected. It sucked. Not only was it a dirty, sooty task, but digging corpses from the rubble and heaps of ash was not fun on the best of days. The first two bodies I saw, half burned like so much meat left on a barbecue grill, had me running to throw up where the women hopefully couldn’t see me.

The part that probably bothered me most was that after a while I started to get used to the grisly scene. And its smell.

All of the dead were bunny beastkin, as far as I could tell. Some were so burned that I couldn’t see any ears. Or hair. Or facial features. At all.

By the end of our search, which was many hours long, we had not found Amelie’s mother or sister. Which was good, because it meant they weren’t killed during the initial attack or due to the fire and the collapsing buildings. But bad because they were likely taken by the Sodality troops.

It still didn’t make any sense to me why soldiers would swoop in, kill some people, take a bunch of prisoners, and raze a peaceful village. What was the purpose?

Amelie must have been feeling the same thing. She stood next to Ysduil in the middle of what had been the town square, a despondent look on her face. Her dress looked even more ragged than it had earlier, smeared with dark lines like sword slashes and hanging on her like a weight. Her shoulders slumped and her back bowed as if her clothing was as heavy as if it were made of lead.

“I found these,” Glasha said, walking up to us. She had gone to search ahead of us, letting us know if she found any evidence of bodies so we—and mostly I mean I—could do the hard work and uncover them. She held a barrel in her arms, remarkably intact. “The cask had been knocked into a cistern and so was saved from the fire, I think. There were some apples in it. I also found this bread. It’s a little singed on the edges, but still edible. It was sitting in a stone container.”

“Oh, those are good finds,” Ysduil said.

“Then there’s this.” Glasha scratched her head. “I don’t know how it survived. It was in a hole in the ground, some charred board that I think were floorboards above it. It was wrapped in some leather and cloth.”

The dunim held up a light blue garment. The cloth was thin and airy, like chiffon on Earth. It was exceptionally clean compared to literally everything else around us, including my own clothes. The only thing that came close was Ysduil herself, with her tattered priestess dress, which somehow had managed not to turn black from the ashes. In fact, now that I looked, I only saw smudges on her feet and ankles, and a few marks on her hands and arms.
